TWO local authorities held flag-raising ceremonies to mark Commonwealth Day on Monday.

Chairman of the Forest of Dean District Council, Cllr Norman Stephens read out the Commonwealth Affirmation before raising the flag outside the front of the council offices in Coleford.

Meanwhile at County Hall, in Usk, leader of Monmouthshire Council Cllr Peter Fox also read the Commonwealth Affirmation and the Chairman, Cllr David Dovey read a message from the Queen, head of the Commonwealth. The flag was then raised and stayed in place until midnight.

The day is an opportunity to promote understanding on global issues, international co-operation and the work of the Commonwealth's organisations, which aim to improve the lives of its citizens.
