NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION TWO

Lydney 58, West Hartlepool 8

THERE was a inevitability about West Hartlepool's visit to Regentsholme on Saturday. Without a win this season the boys from the North East – a Premiership team just two seasons ago – played with ample commitment while always looking doomed.

It was a welcome relief for Lydney followers. For once they cheered on a pack going forward rather than in reverse and there was joy for backs coach Peter Kingston who had a rare opportunity to see his charges in full cry.

But while eight tries gave the Severnsiders huge delight the backroom boys were pondering the news that skipper and number eight Nick Burnett is unlikely to play again this season.

Burnett has recently joined the police force and has to undergo a training programme which will rule him out of rugby for at least two months.

"It is unlikely he will play again this season. He has been an excellent captain and his absence will leave us with a major gap to fill but at least we are very fortunate to have Paul Price to take over the leadership," said team manager Gordon Sargent.

"Paul has done the job before and knows what is required. His aim will be five wins from the remaining dozen games to see us in the safety zone."

Busy half-backs Rob Collins and Craig Jones enjoyed good games on Saturday while Stephen Ward was outstanding and the architect of many good moves.

Jimmy Roberts at lock looked more like the powerful player of old while Regan Turoa and Price were constantly involved.

The team will have its work cut out at Rosslyn Park this Saturday but after can expect strong support the following week when Nottingham, four points and five places above them, visit Regentsholme.

Lydney: Tries, Rob Collins and Lex Brookes (two each), Nick Burnett, Stephen Ward, Regan Turoa and Paul Price. Conversions, Craig Jones (6); Penalties, Craig Jones (2).
