THE biggest Heritage Open Days event ever to be staged in the Forest of Dean begins next week with an invitation to visitors and residents alike to visit no less than 27 local venues.

From re-enactors staging battles at St Briavels Castle to more leisurely walks around villages like Newnham, there will be something to suit people of all ages, says co-ordinator Clare Ham.

"We have a really comprehensive programme this year. Firsts include an opportunity to visit the archives at the Deputy Gaveller's office in Coleford and a tour and tasting session at The May Hill Brewery," said Clare.

"You can even have a go at playing an instrument when Pillowell band members open their headquarters on Sunday."

Events begin on Thursday September 6 and run through until Sunday September 9.

Clare says the event is an ideal opportunity not only for visitors to find out what the Forest has to offer but for local people and families to explore areas they had previously only passed by.

"There are lots of hidden corners in the Forest and lots of places people always say they have meant to visit but never have. This is a unique opportunity for everyone to discover things they never knew about the area in which they live," she said.
