A VEHICLE is thought to have damaged a fire hydrant, causing a 20-foot high water leak on a town high street.

Water company Severn Trent was called out as water gushed into the air opposite Lydney Town Hall last week, partly flooding the road.

A company spokesperson admitted the geyser spouting into the air at the junction between Templeway West and the High Street was “a big one”.

They added: “Yesterday (Monday, September 9) we were made aware of a broken hydrant that was damaged by a third party. We attended and stopped the water, and our teams will now be returning today to replace the broken hydrant and get everything back to normal again.”

“The incident did not affect anyone’s water supply and it should be a quick job to replace the hydrant and water supplies won’t need to be turned off.”

Members of the public were involved in directing traffic around the scene on Monday evening.

And posters joked on social media that it was a “free car wash.”
