Gloucestershire County League

Ellwood 0, Tytherington 3

NOT many managers would find something to smile about after a three goal defeat, but Ellwood's Adrian Haines was very much up-beat as he reflected on his team's performance against the title chasing north Bristol side.

"We were beaten by a stronger and more experienced side and that is going to happen when you are rebuilding," said Haines.

"But we are being positive. There are currently six teenagers in the side and every time they play they get a little better. We're a long way from being the worst side in the league and not too far away from challenging the top teams, but it does take time," he said.

Haines took the reins at Ellwood eight weeks ago and since then he has been busy remoulding the team.

"It is not easy to sign players with the necessary experience to play County League football and it was disappointing when we lost a couple of decent players to lower league sides early in the season.

"On the plus side I was pleased to sign centre forward Carl Smith who was in rich form with Lydbrook but is now back for his second stint at Ellwood, as is former Ross Town defender Colin Davis.

"Long term we have decided the way forward is with promising young local players.

"Ellwood has a thriving junior set up with the Under 15s at the top of thier league and an Under 14 side also going well. I hope the senior sides will be benefitting from home-grown talent over the next few years," he said.

Haines is not afraid to dip into the talent available in lower leagues and he has already given opportunities to youngsters Chris Stock, Adam Stradling and Chris Townsend, all previously playing in the North Gloucester League. The trio, along with Matt Stephens who made the step up from the reserves, are now regulars in the side.

"Former Hereford apprentices Ryan Pendrey and Steve Warren have also been recruited. I have made Ryan captain and I'm looking to them to bring some of the experience they gained at the Conference club. Although I will be asking a lot of them they are both excellent players and I'm confident they will not let me down.

"We are not lacking in enthusiasm or endeavour. There is an excellent team spirit and the youngsters are really keen to play and to learn. If we can avoid injuries I reckon there are some good times ahead," he said.

Former Ross Town and Monmnouth goalkeeper Dan Head is a key player and the experienced players include Clark Barrow, Alan Bell and Duncan Sleeman.

"They add some stability to the side and as the younger players adjust to County League football, I am certain we will pull off some surprises before the New Year," said Haines.

Ellwood's aim is a top six league position.

"That may seem a little way off at the moment but I am confident it can be achieved. If we can keep this squad together we could be a real force to be reckoned with very soon," said Haines.
