STAFF at Westbury Court describe resident George Herelle as "truly an inspiration."
And no wonder. At the age of 101 he remains active and independent still enjoying a conversation and time out with his family.
Mr Herelle was the guest of honour when he celebrated his latest birthday last week with members of his family, friends and staff.
Born in St Lucia, he served in the Falkland Islands in the 1914-18 war and in 1916 met the explorer Sir Ernest Shackelton.
He lost his wife, Maude, last year. They had been married for 70 years.
