THIS week the straw that broke the camel's back has been placed across mine – no longer can I support the Conservative Party as it is being led by David Cameron!
As I see it, the Conservative Party is being "skewed" by the Liberal faction of this Coalition. For some time I have had a vague feeling that too much is being "given" to the Lib Dems to keep them on side and
consequently ill-thought through legislation has been passed which at the time left me feeling uneasy.
A case in point is that of the 65 year old retired businessman who has been extradited to the USA despite all the concerns which have been expressed in the media, particularly those regarding the young man with Asperger's Syndrome, and coming on top of the harrowing report from the financial businessman who was extradited a couple of years back and experienced the most horrific imprisonment which, apparently, is the way the Americans treat their prisoners.
Then we had Ken Clarke pushing for secret courts. I do wonder where these Conservatives are coming from! We all know that this type of legislation, rushed through as today's 'Big Idea' (never mind Big Society!) leads to unforseen circumstances. I do not doubt that before too long it would be useful for all kinds of "special circumstances" which would have very little to do with terrorism but a lot to do with protecting government!
But the catalyst came yesterday! I had already begun to very seriously doubt I could continue to support the Conservatives when they started to talk of same sex marriage. Indeed, I wrote to Mark Harper on February 20 setting out my concerns as to the direction the party was taking! No reply to date!
However, when during his broadcast to the nation, Mr Cameron did his "conservative" caring heart and told us "the family is so, so important" I thought "whoa, whoa you can't run with the hare and hunt with the hounds! (police horse or no police horse)."
My Oxford Dictionary, 1996, states: MARRIAGE – a legal union of a man and a woman in order to live together and often have children. A state of affairs which is practised and understood by societies all across the world!
FAMILY – a set of parents and children, or of relations, living together or not, the members of a household exps: parents and their children.
To my mind, his two statements taken together reveal that Cameron is really a Liberal – one of the "either or" and "yes and no" people and that is not what I voted for!
I have cancelled my subscription after 50 years and no doubt will now have a serious discussion with my husband regarding the other funding which goes out of this household and into the Conservative coffers!
