THE wild boar are causing havoc – yet again – for residents in Yorkley with one pensioner saying he had no choice but to clear the mess.

John Preest, 70, rolled up his sleeves after spotting a young mum walking in the main road with her young daughter as the pavement was almost impassable.

Not one for sitting back and seeing others struggle, Mr Preest quickly grabbed his brush and shovel and cleared the pavement.

He said: “For months the boar has been turfing up Chems Patch (opposite the new village hall) and last week a mobility scooter almost went over and the next day I saw a mum and her daughter walk in the main road.

“The mess took up the majority of the pavement with a foot left for pedestrians. I’ve since cleared the pavement but no doubt it will be back in a state again.”

Another resident, Clive Lear, also complained to the Review that the boar had ripped up grass around Danby Close which was proving an issue for elderly walkers.

Mr Preest said: “I’ve spoken to highways several times as well as the Forest of Dean District Council and the Forestry Commission. I’m now resulting to sort the problem out myself. It’s not ideal as I’m an OAP but what else can you do?”

A Forestry Commission spokeswoman said: “The annual cull is in place in order to bring down population numbers so these incident do not occur so often. The Forestry Commission do not reinstate the ground when rooting takes place.”
