DEREK Probert from Lower Milkwall has reached the end of his tether.
He admits to using bad language over the telephone. He admits to becoming stressed. He admits that he feels powerless, angry and, at times, quite maddened.
All because he is facing court within the next few weeks for failing to have a television licence. Even though he has one – nailed to the wall – and has had for the last 10 to 15 years.
"In fact I can't remember when I didn't have one.
"I've been pursued now for close to 10 or 15 years and I've always had a licence. I have the number, I know that it is paid by direct debit through my partner, Angela.
"I have told them this, I have sat for hours on the phone, I have sworn down the phone, I admit that, but it is maddening.
"I have said, 'take me to court, prosecute me, do something. And now they have. What I don't understand is why they can't accept I have a licence. I've got a reference number. What more can I say?
"I do have a short fuse, I admit to that, but I think I have been wound up long enough. It does stress me out and at times make me feel quite sick.
"Both my partner, Angela, and myself are in our mid sixties, we don't need this."
•Derek is facing action from John Robinson, Solent Enforcement Division acting for TV Licensing. The Review has been told that the licensing authority is now in touch with Derek and treating his case as a matter of priority.
