THERE were those who predicted woe for Lydney as they dropped out of National League Two rugby last season and decided no longer to offer contracts or cash to their players.

Still among England's top 50 clubs, the Severnsiders became one of the very few teams in National League Three not to offer any kind of payment. It was back to rugby for pride and fun.

On Saturday they rounded off a highly satisfactory season with a convincing home win against Camberley and finished in sixth place to add to their Roadchef Gloucestershire County Cup success.

Now, in true rugby tradition, they are packing their bags for an end of season bash in Spain where they will play two matches.

Reflecting on the season team manager Gordon Sargent said it had been a major decision to change the direction of the club.

"I have to say our results speak for themselves. It has proved to be the right course of action and we have enjoyed a very satisfactory season. Everyone at the club is very happy and looking forward to next September," he said.

The club, he said, would continue to do all it could for the players and recognise their commitment in different ways.

"We have a sound and enthusiastic following and good support from local businesses. As an example we are delighted to receive the support of Derek Pomeroy of Pomeroy Press Products who was our chief kit sponsor this season and before Saturday's game a number of those who support us in so many ways enjoyed a very successful pre-match lunch," said Sargent.

Lydney will be hoping to squeeze more rugby from their vastly experienced senior trio, Nick Nelmes, Julian Davis and Adrian Knox.

"They both coached and played this season and it was obviously a huge task for them. They have all indicated that they want to be involved next year but are not really keen to coach

"Pat Kiely played a major role from the New Year on but he is involved in coaching at Kingsholm and has been offered a new contract there. We hope he will be involved with us but we will probably advertise for a head coach," he said.

Sargent said it was hoped the squad would remain intact.

"We have a sound squad and some promising young players. We would hope to recruit three or four more to give us additional strength in depth," he said.

Lydney scored six tries as they swept aside Camberley with some excellent attacking rugby.

Flanker Gavin Groves opened the scoring with a try converted by Julian Hill who then added a penalty goal. Mark James and Charlie Vine added further tries before half-time.

Further tries by Alex Bragg (2) and Paul Price – celebrating his 200th appearance – and a couple of conversions and a penalty by Hill rounded off a very sound performance.
