FOLLOWING the recent passenger survey at Lydney Railway Station, campaign organisers are claiming it as a great success.

The survey was conducted between 6am and 9pm on Wednesday September 15, during which time more than 270 passengers caught the train at the station.

Of these, over 150 have completed the questionnaire.

Commenting on passengers' reactions the survey, coordinator, David Flint, said he was astounded at the response.

"Similar surveys at Severn Tunnel and Chepstow Stations hadn't produced nearly as much passion about the lack of decent public transport facilities," he added.

Those conducting the survey included rail lobby groups from Severn Tunnel Junction and Chepstow, and assisted by members of Dean Forest Railway. Its purpose was to identify public transport problems and opportunities in the area. A spokesman for the group claimed that a similar survey at Severn Tunnel Junction earlier this year had identified 23 per cent of survey respondents as driving to that station from the Forest of Dean and Lydney areas.

Results of the survey will be published in the New Year and following after that there will be a conference to which MPs, county councillors, train and bus operators, and many other stakeholders will be invited.
