PLAN ahead ... that's the best way to grow mighty, eye-watering onions!

The Review's hugely successful competition to see who could grow the biggest onion in Wyedean this year brought in a massive entry. So we are doing it all again.

Once more we have a supply of the famous Kelsae onion seeds – the ones used by the top gardeners to produce the best show-stoppers – and we are inviting readers to try their hand to see who can grow the biggest.

To join the competition all you have to do is send us a stamped addressed envelope marked 'Onions' and we will send you 10 seeds. Alternatively you can call by the office to pick them up.

The top growers say that by tradition the best onions are always planted on Boxing Day so now is the time to prepare.

Gardening expert Roy Haviland, a member of the Gloucestershire Guild of Judges, and the man who judges the entries at Newent's famous Onion Festival, will be telling readers how to get started.

Once again the target date will be the Bream Flower Show on the third Saturday in August. There will be two sections – one for adults and one for youngsters aged 16 and under. There will be £50 cash prizes for the winners, second prizes of £25 and third prizes of £15.

Polish up those spades ... it may not seem like it, but the time has come to think of spring!
