A NEW house could rise from the ruins of the former Tidenham manor which was destroyed in a fire 35 years ago.
Despite objections from the parish council and a number of local residents, Forest of Dean district councillors are being recommended to back plans for a 'manor house' when they meet next Tuesday.
It is believed there has been a house on the site since the 13th century. The property was rebuilt in the 1880s and extensively remodelled prior to the First World War. It was undergoing restoration in 1968 when it burnt down.
While the house has remained a ruin, the gardens – including a sunken footway and various grottos – have always been fully maintained.
The plan is for a house of a similar size to the original property and in the same position. Ancillary buildings including a mill, cider press, ice house and cottages will be restored.
Critics say the new building bears no resemblance to a Victorian manor house.
The application has been made by a Newport man.
