LYDNEY man Mark Beddis has reached new heights – 400ft to be precise – as he continues his campaign to raise money for charity.

The former teaching assistant at Severnbanks Primary School took the plunge at the National Diving and Activity Centre at Tidenham to the sound of rousing applause from a crowd below.

The 27-year-old told his story to the Review in June of his mother’s 23-year battle with multiple sclerosis (MS), which left her struggling to walk.

The story resonated with Monmouth family-run business, Westside Fabrications, who donated £100 to the cause.

Mark said: “I have been overwhelmed with the support and donations I have received from people since deciding to do the bungee jump for MS. I can’t thank every enough who have donated so far.

“Between 20 and 30 people watched and supported me during my jump. I was nervous to begin with as I was being strapped in, but with the cheers and clapping it made me much more at ease.

“As I went up in the crane I was too focused on actually doing the jump to say how I felt. As I reached the top and I had to stand up and balance on the edge of the cage, I looked around at the magnificent views and took it all in.

“The crew/staff asked me if I was ready. The next thing I heard was three, two, one, bungee and with that it was time. I spread eagled my arms and jumped, as I let out an almighty scream, I could hear everyone cheering and clapping.

“When I eventually got my feet back on the ground I felt so proud of myself and couldn’t believe I did it.

“I have raised nearly £900 in total so far and, although I have smashed my target of £500, it would be amazing to raise more than £1,000 for multiple sclerosis. I’m happy to spread awareness of this less well-known charity and disability.”

A second fundraiser – which involved a zumba evening – with local instructors Amanda Chard and Hannah Barton raised a further £150 for the cause on Friday night.

Anybody who still wishes to donate can do so at www.justgiving.com/Mark-Beddis.

The cheque will be donated on Thursday, September 10 in Coleford.
