AN OLD photograph reunited four former teammates and shed light on a little-known part of a Forest football club’s history.
The photo of the 1947 Broadwell Ladies football team has been in the family of Georgina Wyman since it was taken, as it featured her mum, Davina Gowland.
She offered the photo to the club when she was having a clear-out – and the idea of reuniting the six surviving members came about.
Four of them, Iris and Audrey Hughes, Brenda Harding and Alma Hinton, were the club’s guests of honour last week.
They recalled playing in grass that was ankle deep on the field behind the current club.
They had black and orange tops made out of parachute material and borrowed other bits of kit such as shorts.
Playing Cinderford was particularly memorable for them, and on one occasion they travelled to Burton-on-Trent to play.
The players ranged in age from 13 to 30.
Mrs Hinton recalled scoring a goal that was not popular with her teammates. She said: “I’d forgotten we’d changed around at half-time, so I scored in the wrong goal.”
Broadwell FC vice- chairman Gary Hurcombe said: “We were really pleased to be able to welcome the ladies to the club and find out more about the team.
“We have photos going back to 1914, but it was a surprise to find out about the ladies’ team.”
Mrs Wyman said: “The photo has always been around and I thought it would be nice to bring the survivors together.”
