THE WELSH transport minister has said she will meet campaigners looking for safety improvements to an accident blackspot in Chepstow.

Monmouth AM Nick Ramsay is backing the campaign by the widow of a man killed on the A466 link road for better safety measures.

Mr Ramsay raised the issue of safety on the road – which has seen five serious crashes in five years – with minister Edwina Hart (Lab, Gower) at the Welsh Assembly in Cardiff last week.

Mr Gerald Russell, of Monmouth, died when he was involved in a collision on the road in October last year.

As a result of the incident Mrs Hart asked officials to carry out a study of the A466 from the junction with the M48 to the High Beech roundabout.

Mr Ramsay said: “I’m supporting Mr Russell’s widow’s campaign for changes to the A466 to improve safety.”

Among the suggestions are dualling the road, the installation of a safety barrier, a reduction in the 60mph speed limit or providing proper parking for commuters car sharing across the Severn bridge.

Mrs Hart said: “I’d be more than happy, diary permitting, to actually come and meet and discuss these issues, because it’s not just what’s happened to Mr Russell.

“My officials will be very proactive in looking at what improvements they can do with this study, but I will be happy to meet.”
