I am referring to your front page article regarding another collision at Broadoak bridge, in which you have invited suggestions. I think I have an idea that would only cost a few hundred pounds to put right.
If large signs were placed at where the A48 joined the A40 outside Gloucester on the roundabout and again at Chepstow roundabout where the motorway leads to Chepstow, warning HGV drivers that a low bridge is ahead, any HGVs joining the A48 between these signs should be given adequate warning to turn around.
In the past I have noticed that double decker buses only just get through, as long as they stay in the middle of the road.
I would have thought that HGV drivers have a legal responsibility to check their height and width before leaving their depot. Any drivers of HGVs who ignore the warnings should be fined heavily.
I am no structural engineer but there have been a few collisions with this bridge in the past, so I would have to question the stability of the bridge.
In the worst case scenario of a train passing over the bridge and it collapsing, you would have a major incident on your hands resulting in many deaths and the A48 being closed for a very long time.
Talking of deaths, there have been many people killed on the A48 due to collisions. I do not think enough is being done to warn drivers to check their speed. To combat this I think that speed ramps should be installed at intervals to stop this from happening.
