JANE Watkins could only sit and watch helplessly as a ton of twisted metal catapulted through the air towards her.

"I had time to think 'this is going to hurt'," said Jane who was caught up in an horrific crash involving three cars and a lorry at Tidenham last Wednesday.

Jane, who lives at Hawthorn Close, Bulwark, Chepstow, escaped with only minor injuries.

"I can't believe I and the woman driving the car ahead of me were able to walk out of Frenchay Hospital at 10pm that night with only bumps and bruises," she said.

The driver of the other car involved, a 32 year-old Lydney man, is still in intensive car at Frenchay and on Tuesday his condition was described as 'critical'.

The crash caused traffic chaos on the A48 as motorists were diverted at Tutshill and Chepstow and had to make their way through St Briavels. The road was closed for five hours.

Jane was travelling back to Chepstow having visited her father in Lydney. Her 10 month old baby, Angharad, was in a child's seat in the back of the car.

"It worked perfectly and she was unhurt," said Jane.

Jane was able to stop her car as vehicles collided ahead of her.

"I remember thinking I would be a witness when suddenly one of the cars flew into the air and came towards me. It landed on the bonnet of mine but fortunately rolled over to one side," she said.

Jane had spent part of a normal Wednesday delivering the Review in the Chepstow area and still had 70 more to take out. They were still on the back seat on the car.

"Customers really look forward to receiving the Review so this will explain to those I missed just why," she said.

Jane said the emergency services were magnificent.

"The police were wonderful and I would also like to thank everyone who stopped. When you are caught up in an incident like this it is just a sea of faces but I would like to thank them all for their support," she said.
