THE main A48 road was closed and a woman driver airlifted to Frenchay Hospital on Monday evening after a serious collision at Blakeney.
The accident happened at around 6pm just outside the Cock Inn, and it involved several cars and a heavy goods vehicle.
The truck and a Peugeot 106 were involved in the initial collision with two following cars suffering minor damage. The woman, who was unnamed at the time of going to press, was cut out of the vehicle and taken to the Bristol hospital by air ambulance. Today her condition was described as 'stable'.
A police officer at the scene said the cause was being investigated. None of the other people involved, including the truck driver, was seriously hurt, though they were badly shaken and were taken to the Cock Inn to recover and help police investigators.
Traffic was routed through Blakeney and Yorkley while the road remained closed for several hours.
Other accidents have taken place at the same spot which is on a blind bend.
Last week there was a fatality on another section of the A48 when a car and a mobile crane were involved in a collision at Elton Corner, another notorious blackspot.
Ben Nice, a 19 year-old student from Cinderford who was a passenger in the car, was killed.
A student at Manchester University, Ben played cricket for Westbury and was also a keen golfer.
