WHAT a difference three years, one month and a day makes.
The new foundation phase building at Thornwell Primary School in Chepstow was officially opened last Friday (July 4).
It replaces the infant block that was gutted in an arson attack in June 2011. Those responsible for the attack were never caught.
Acting headteacher Mr Tim Appleby told guests, who included Monmouth MP David Davies and county councillors, that the staff and children were very excited to have the new building.
As part of the celebrations, a samba band made up of Year Six pupils played and a tree was planted in the school grounds by the chairman of Monmouthshire County Council Councillor John Prosser assisted by pupils Millie Hill and Ethan Cliffe.
Cllr Prosser said the work had been finished ahead of schedule and had been in use since the end of May.
He added: "This new learning and teaching environment aims to prepare the school's youngest pupils for a life in the 21st century by developing their skills and knowledge through a more experimental and interactive approach to learning.
"The design includes flexible spaces and a variety of activity areas to give students the opportunity to learn in different settings.
This extension is flexible, adaptable, future proof and technology rich."
Chairman of governors Mr Gary Nicholas said: "I'd like thank you – the pupils and staff – for all the extra effort you have put in over the last three years one month and a day since the fire.
"I'd also like to thank the wider community for the support and encouragement they have given us at this time of upheaval.
"The children have responded in such a positive way to the temporary accommodation and that credit has to go back to the teachers for the example, dedication and determination you have all put in to make this a success.
"In September you start the new school year as one building, one roof and one school and that is a milestone for us to mark."
The county council's Cabinet member for schools, Cllr Liz Hacket-Pain also praised the staff for their response to the challenge.
