IT was a lucky day for two people at the 34th annual Newnham Show on Saturday (August 31) as they each won three sections.
Bruce Webber and Julie Sparkes each picked up three first prizes with Julie winning the Barbara Allsopp Memorial Cup for the whole show most points. Bruce impressed the judges in the vegetable class where he won most points and best exhibit and most points the flower section.
Among the other winners at the show, which was held for the first time in the newly-renovated Armoury Village Hall, was Jeremy Reader. He won both the most points and best exhibit in the fruit section and received the Fedden Cup and Newnham Shield respectively for each category. Meanwhile Ron Chambers won best exhibit in the flowers class and scooped the silver salver. The most points for the floral art went to Patty Swinley who won the Caulket Trophy and Carole Reader had the most points in the domestic class. The Mary Boucher Rose Bowl was given to Hazel Bacon for the best exhibit in the domestic class and Julie Sparkes won the Willis Cup for most points in art and crafts. Mike Penny won both the most points and best exhibit in the photography section and the children's section was won by Georgina Lowe, who picked up the Townley Trophy for most points in the 11 and under section, and Julie Sparkes won the Barnes Cup in the 16 and under. Each first prize winner also received 60p, second was 40p and third 30p.
Show organiser Anna Fedden said: "There was a good turnout and the quality of entries was very high, the judges had a difficult time deciding on some of the winners. The main disappointment was with the low number of entries in the art and children's classes, as although the standard was high there were not many entries. The judge of the art section was very surprised, as Newnham is full of talented artists, and the organisers know that Newnham is full of talented children too."
After the judging finished the produce was then auctioned to invest back into the show – and this year it fetched £500.
Anna added: "The organisers would like to thank all the show sponsors, including all the winners who donated their prize money and everyone who gave their entries to the auction, all the judges, the ladies who provided the teas, Alan Curtis who was a great auctioneer, and all who came and supported the show. Although it is mainly held just as a community event, the funds raised are welcome in ensuring the future of the show."
