I WAS disappointed on receiving the DETR press release on control of high hedges (Leylandii in particular), to read that responsibility for implementing the law is to be placed on local council authorities.
Foresters have never been noted for obeying council regulations. Even court orders mean nothing to them and are blatantly ignored! This inbred refusal to comply, no doubt goes right back to our ancestors who moved fences and erected buildings overnight.
Also, if the council cannot be bothered to control the huge Leylandii at Yew Tree Brake Cemetery, how will they find time to enforce the law when it has to be applied to disputes over neighbours' high Leylandii hedges? – Sheila Birt, Mile End.
