Nothern Senior League Division One

Broadwell 1, Sharpness 0

IT'S not often a manager praises his defensive players for a team's success, but Broadwell's Gary Hurcombe says the mean machine is the reason for a top four place.

A battling win over Sharpness – last season's league winners – was typical of Broadwell's fighting spirit this season.

In fact Hurcombe admitted the goal that swung the game – scored by his son Scott – was actually achieved against the run of play.

Young Hurcombe, 18, nailed the winner after Broadwell had been under heavy pressure.

"Scott's been scoring at just the right time. He has scored three in his last four outings and is doing very well," said Gary.

Hurcombe senior picked out goalkeeper Lee Harris as the man-of-the-match – an achievement matched by Sharpness who also named their keeper for an outstanding game.

Broadwell have conceded the lowest number of goals of any team in the league this season, a fact not lost on Hurcombe who is full of praise for defenders Chris Addis, another18 year-old, and his backline partners John Marfell and Lee Williams.

"They have been very tight all season and did very well on Saturday," reported Hurcombe.

And he predicts longer term success for his team as they are mostly young players with a lot to offer for the future.

"If we can keep them all together we should have a useful side for some years to come," he says.
