RESIDENTS living in the narrowest street in Lydney are planning a massive battle to beat off a new development proposal.
They say the only access to the site at the top of Queen Street is by driving up the road which is already heavily congested.
"It was built at the time of the horse and cart and it is unable to cope with the levels of traffic we have at the moment. Any more vehicles would be a nightmare," said campaigner Joanne Buchanan.
She wants Forest of Dean planners to reject the proposal for eight starter homes and a bungalow and double garage in the grounds of Severn View Bungalow.
"It is already a very crowded street. As more and more people get to know about the protest the strength of feeling is growing and there are now a lot of objections," she said.
Ms Buchanan said any new houses would bring further parking problems and drive residents to park in Albert Street and towards Primrose Hill.
She said that already any vehicle wider than an average car had to mount the pavement.
In a 'Save Our Street' leaflet delivered to every home in the road, the campaigners say Queen Street was built over 150 years ago and is one of the last terraced streets in the town. The new building would be completely out of character.
The campaigners want objectors to write to the council while a petition is being organised to be presented to councillors at a later date.
