ON the front page of last week's paper, concern was expressed about the height of the wind turbine at Alvington as part of the Severnside development.
Compared to the height and width of the three or four cooling towers which will be built at the site of Hitachi's proposed huge new nuclear power station at Oldbury, just across the river from Alvington, these turbines will be absolutely insignificant. As well as being an absolute eyesore for all on Severnside, the cooling towers will pose a threat to local health with their constant output of cancer-producing particles of low level radiation.
Wind turbines can be dismantled in days. Once built, nuclear power stations are here for hundreds of years (while only producing electricity for about 40 years) and the highly radioactive material they produce remains for thousands of years.
It is this enormous new nuclear power station we should all be opposing in the Forest if we want to protect Severnside for our children and generations to come.
