WOODEN beer pegs have become quite the thing to be seen with at the Coach and Horses in Chepstow helping raise more than £500 for the St David's Foundation and hospice care in Monmouthshire and Wales.

Inn-goers at the Coach challenged each other to a 'show me your beer peg' with a fine payable if no peg emerged. A special ale named, aptly, St David's Ale, was brewed, with all funds going to the charity. Then there was a big fundraising night to mark St David's Day itself (March 1) with a quiz, raffle, donations and – as a highlight – designer beer pegs!

Jeremy Jones, one of the organisers of the event, says the highlight was regulars making designer items out of their wooden pegs.

Many beautiful and innovative items were made and the judge Judi Edwards the fundraiser for St.Davids Foundation, took quite some time to choose the three prize winners and said: "Nights like this are a vital part of our work with the local communities as we need to raise over five million pounds per year to continue to provide our much needed work.  We very much appreciate the fantastic effects made by Ian Meyrick (landlord) and his generous customers and staff."
