AS Remembrance Sunday poignantly arrived on November 11 this year, communities across the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean gathered to honour their war dead.

There was a turnout of hundreds at Coleford, where a special wreath was also laid at the clock tower in honour of those who lost their lives in the Twin Towers tragedy in New York. A parade to St John's Church for a remembrance service followed.

At Cinderford, veterans paraded from the Belle Vue Centre to the Triangle before going on to the Baptist Church for a service.

Similar events were held at Lydney and at Bream, where Burma Star members turned out in force.

Smaller communities like Newnham held their own touching ceremonies, some no doubt saddened by the fact that British Legion numbers dwindle every year.

Here villagers gathered at the War Memorial alongside the veterans, afterwards hearing prayers by the Rev John Seaman in the church.

At all the debt we owe the fallen was honoured with a silent tribute and the touching words, "We shall remember them".
