FIRSTLY let me say how sorry I was to hear of the incident with two out of control, off-lead dogs which killed an innocent cat.

I am a dog owner of 20 years and agree with what Patricia Hodgkinson has written. We moved to the area three years ago and I have never met such irresponsible, numpty dog owners who seem to delight in having off-lead, out of control dogs with little or no recall.

I have a dog, an aggressive bitch, I know what she is capable of and she is never allowed off-lead. However we still get pestered by off-lead dogs. My opinion is, it is downright rude and ignorant for owners to allow their dogs to approach an on-lead dog without checking with the owner of the on-lead dog first. Not all dogs and owners appreciate being jumped all over by off-lead dogs!

Nor do unsuspecting members of the public with children want to be bothered by these dogs!

I like your idea of an ownership licence, however I suspect this would be hard to implement and enforce. It's those irresponsible breeders and puppy farmers that we first need to target; those who will sell a puppy to anyone regardless of whether they are suitable or not.

No one breed of dog is any more dangerous than another. They all have teeth; they are all capable of biting and killing. It's their breeders and owners who are the danger. Rip Posy xx – for Patricia Hodgkinson and family – Sally Roberts.
