POLICE are seeking help to catch a callous burglar, who stole cash from a 'vulnerable' Ross on Wye pensioner – after holding him at knifepoint.
The robbery happened at about 2.30am on Tuesday April 15, in Three Crosses Road.
The victim was an elderly man – said by police to be 'vulnerable' – who was asleep downstairs when his assailant struck, after breaking in by smashing a door panel and then confronting the pensioner, threatening him with a knife and demanding money.
The offender then fled from the scene after the pensioner handed over around £60 in cash, which the robber added to by also taking money left out for the milkman.
Police believe that the robber arrived at the scene by bicycle, from the direction of Brampton Street.
The burglar is around 5 feet 9 inches tall, 'skinny' and was wearing a ski mask, a hooded top with the hood up, and gloves.
Detective Sergeant Mark Morton of Hereford CID said: "Crimes like this are fortunately rare, but targeting an elderly and vulnerable man in his own home is truly despicable.
"It has left him shocked and, although he wasn't actually attacked, he did suffer a minor cut to his hand during the incident."
Officers from the safer neighbourhood team are said to be conducting targeted patrols in the area to provide reassurance. House to house inquiries have also taken place.
DS Morton also issued this appeal: "If anyone knows something about this, but has not told us, then I would appeal to them to search their conscience and do the right thing by picking up a phone and contacting us immediately.
"We understand that some people may not wish to speak to us directly, but there is always the option of passing on details anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers."
Anyone who witnessed the man in the area, or has any information, should contact detectives at Hereford Police Station on 101, quoting incident reference 95-S-150414.
