FURTHER to the letter from Mrs C. Haynes, of Bream, on the subject of the increased amount of dog mess left on the streets since the foot and mouth outbreak, I'm afraid her appeal will fall on deaf ears.
This is an increasing problem which has been with us for years, way before the foot and mouth crisis. Readers of the Review will undoubtedly testify to the regular letters complaining about irresponsible dog owners, but unfortunately, the situation doesn't improve.
I take my hat off to the pet owners who do carry poop scoops or plastic bags and clear up after their animals, but I fear these responsible and considerate members of our society are in the minority.
Considering there is so much of this unpleasantness around, it's a mystery that we rarely catch the culprits doing the "dirty deed." I've come to the conclusion that there must be an army of nightly dog walkers who feel they are veiled by the darkness.
The existing system operated by the district council is, unfortunately, financially under-funded in this area.
Surely the return of a realistic dog licence would ensure that monies are available from those who create the problem – what can be fairer than that?
All we can do is make yet another appeal to everyone who owns a dog – please ensure you have a poop scoop or plastic bag with you when your walk your dog. – Mr & Mrs R.N. James, Primrose Hill, Lydney.
