POLICE are investigating after a Monmouth landlady was found dead at her pub early this morning (Saturday, February 9).
Paramedics were called to the Gate House pub beside the town's historic Monnow Bridge just before 4am and found 65-year-old Judith Ramsden unresponsive.She was declared dead at the scene at 4.25am, and her family confirmed her passing online this evening.A statement posted by Phil Ramsden said: "It is with our deepest sadness that we are placing this notice to inform of the passing of Judith Ramsden, our beloved wife, mother and grandmother on the 9th February 2019."Her passing was sudden and completely unexpected; therefore, due to these circumstances we will be unable to open the Gate House whilst further arrangements are being made."We would like to thank our friends, staff and regular customers for their understanding during this difficult time and will be notifying of any further information and arrangements for the funeral in due course."Once again we would like to thank everyone for their kind words and support and will appreciate the time needed as necessary to make these arrangements and adapt to our devastating loss."Sincerely Phil, Charlotte, Westley, Christopher and Alexandrea."Gwent Police scene of crime officers were at the Gate House until this afternoon.
The pub, which is jointly owned by Phil and Judith Ramsden, was taped off and closed on what is normally a busy international rugby day for the business.Many people took to social media to express their shock and to offer condolences.One said: "RIP Beautiful lady. Angels with you now Jude."Another said: "Absolutely devastated to hear this news. Jude was one special lady, she gave so much love, was so strong, incredibly generous and loyal."A third added: "No words for how shocked and sad I am. Jude was like a second Mum to me this last year and I am so grateful for all the love, support, awesome chats and big big laughs she gave me. She's a big part of why Monmouth feels like home."
The Gatehouse, which formerly traded as the Barley Mow, is popular with townspeople and visitors alike, being right next to the town’s main car park and beside the 800-year-old bridge.
