YOUNG nature lovers have planted trees donated by a local quarry company around their new school playing field.

The children, all members of the nature club at Lydbrook School, planted berry-bearing trees, such as rowan and hawthorn, donated by Hanson Aggregates of Drybrook Quarry.

Head teacher Simon Lusted said: "Until recently we didn't have a school playing field but we have raised funds and now have an area which has had to be levelled to make it suitable for the children.

"This has created a bank which we are going to turn into a nature conservation area and these trees will be part of that. Because they are berry-bearing trees they will attract birds and other wildlife and provide a valuable area of nature study for the children."

Drybrook Quarry manager Ian Southgate gave the children a helping hand during the tree-planting. He said: "We are carrying out extensive tree planting ourselves at the quarry and when we heard that the school was creating a nature area we were delighted to help out."

Pupils from Lydbrook school plan to visit Drybrook later in the year to see how the quarry works.
