A PETITION is being organised to protest against Awre man Nick Bull's plans to reopen a stone quarry between Blakeney Straits and the outskirts of Blakeney Village.

"I want as many people as possible to write to Shire Hall objecting to the proposal," says Paula Smith, who lives at The Rudge on Blakeney Hill.

She says the plans to reopen Copes Quarry at Fowleswell Slade will mean that the peace of the area is destroyed. She has so far collected 38 signatures against the plan but has been told a petition is not enough – individual protests only will be considered.

"I understand the county council has to inform local people in writing about the proposals but when I rang Shire Hall they said they had not done this," she said.

"There is just a notice on a tree in a dense part of the track that you cannot see through all the leaves at the moment. And who is to know that it isn't just another Foot and Mouth poster without going up to it?"

She says the will also mean reopening an abandoned track which runs past the bottom of her garden.

And not only that – the dust from reopened stone workings could badly affect her three year-old son, who is an asthma sufferer.

More traffic on an already busy road which has several tight bends will bring other dangers into the equation.

The Forest of Dean District Council has already considered Mr Bull's proposals to take up to 20 tons of stone a week from the quarry over the next 27 years, and is recommending objection.

County planners are expected to discuss the proposal on November 19.
