SCOUTS representing several Football League clubs were at Lakers School last Saturday to cast their eyes over youngsters taking part in a massive youth football competition.

The event, organised by Milkwall Youth Football Club, attracted 80 teams aged between seven and 14. It was the sixth year of the tournament and once again it was judged a huge success.

Chris Powles, a member of the organising team, said the day had gone without a hitch.

"It was brilliant. Apart from the odd heavy shower the event went off very smoothly and we have received plenty of praise from people impressed by both the standard of play and the organisation," he said.

Mr Powles said scouts representing Bristol Rovers, Bristol City and Cardiff City attended and were impressed by the high standard of football.

"The idea is to get youngsters interested in playing football and to raise the profile of youth football at Milkwall," he added.

Local teams were joined by others from Gloucester, Bristol and South Wales. Among the successful sides Forest Rangers, of Cinderford, won the under 14s section, Milkwall were runners-up in the under 13s section and Lydney runners-up at under 12s.
