THE Royal National Lifeboat Institution would like to extend its thanks to the people of the Lydney area, following a collection held at Tesco in Lydney on Sunday, February 19.

The collection raised a total of £444.38, all of which will go towards the charity’s work of saving life at sea.

The local fundraising branch of the RNLI covers Gloucester, Newent and the Forest of Dean.

This is a tremendous result for us, and a great demonstration of the generosity of local people. Thanks must also go to Tesco for allowing us to collect.

It is 150 years since local people funded a lifeboat launched in Gloucester, and it is wonderful to see that the community continues to support the work of the Institution.

We will be celebrating the 150th anniversary with an event in Gloucester Docks in July, alongside Gloucester Food Festival.

The event will also commemorate the 10th anniversary of major flooding in Gloucestershire, during which the RNLI played a significant role in helping to rescue and support those affected..

As well as commemorating these two anniversaries, the event in July aims to raise the profile of the current work of the RNLI.

In particular, the RNLI is campaigning to try and halve the number of drownings around the coast, by raising awareness of the dangers involved.

There will be more about this event closer to the time and it is hoped that local people and the local business community will give their support to this commemoration of significant events in Gloucestershire’s history and heritage.
