DRIVERS using the A48 Lydney bypass face diversions through the town until January 18 while repair work is carried out on Dean Forest Railway's level crossing.

Some minor holdups have occurred in the town, especially in rush-hour, since the work started on Monday. Access by road from Lydney to the town's mainline station also means a detour, since access from Church Road is blocked to traffic.

The vital maintenance works, managed by Atkins Rail, are to make significant improvements to the Dean Forest line.

Work started on November 19 last year at level crossings on Station Road/Harbour Road to replace panels between the tracks for traffic to drive over the level crossing, and to repair rails.

Work to install new rails at the Station Road/Harbour Road crossings will also take place overnight from 7pm on Saturday (January 12) to 7am on Sunday (January 13); and 7pm on Saturday January 19 to 7am on Sunday January 20.

The road will be closed to traffic between these times.
