“A ROLLICKING, feel-good musical,” is how the latest offering from Monmouth Music Theatre was described, as the group prepares to join forces with Off Centre Theatre this weekend.

The company presented their version of much-loved musical Sister Act earlier this month at the Savoy Theatre in Monmouth. They are returning with the Monmouth-based theatre company on Saturday (March 3) to help celebrate the Savoy’s 90th birthday. The show is billed as “a night of celebration with music, comedy sketches and one act playlets.”

Gay Rogers, spokesperson for the company, said: “Sister Act was a fantastic show and attracted a record number of people. It was fast-paced and fun and contained a host of foot-tapping, happy songs with the feel of the 1970s and Motown about them.

“It’s a rollicking, feel-good musical, set in 1970s America, about a nightclub singer, Deloris van Cartier, who witnesses a gangland murder and is placed for her own safety in a New York convent. She has to adopt the persona of a nun.

“It’s a very run-down place with few people in the congregation on a Sunday and the choir is dreadful. Deloris feels completely lost and out of place in the convent, but when she decides to turn the choir around and make it into a pitch perfect gospel choir she finds that she has a lot more in common with the nuns than she thought.

“The plot thickens when the bad guys who committed the murder find out where she is.”

Monmouth Music Theatre, formerly known as Monmouth Operatic Society, was formed in 1988.

“We are all amateurs who enjoy getting together, making music and having fun,” Gay added. “Our next production will be Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pinafore and will be performed in September. We meet every week, and encourage anyone interested to drop by. You will be made very welcome.”

The group meets each Wednesday at 7.30pm at Monmouth Methodist Hall. Contact Gay on 01600 740336 for more information.
