RUSPIDGE Carnival is no more – and the organisers say this is mainly thanks to the lack of local people willing to come forward and volunteer their help.
Carnival committee chairman Chris Milliner he was sad it had been wound up but his members thought it the best course after the village failed to stage a carnival last year.
"Everyone said it was one of the best, especially for a small village. We haven't got the resources like Cinderford."
The event used to be a major link in the local carnival scene, fitting between Cinderford and Parkend carnivals.
Now the funds raised by previous carnivals and held in trust by the parish council are to be given to Ruspidge Playgroup (£500) and Ruspidge Memorial Hall (£28.86).
Mr Milliner, whose organisation took over from a previous disbanded committee three years ago, said: "We thought it was appropriate for the money to go to the young ones for a bit of land for them to play on."
He has written a letter to everyone who has had an interest in the carnival to inform them of the moves.
In it he states: "It makes me sad to write to you of the distribution of the remaining money in the Ruspidge Carnival Account.
"Having served on both the old and new carnival committee I have to say we both had the same problem, the lack of local people willing to come forward and volunteer their help. The end result is the demise of Ruspidge Carnival.
"I would like to thank everyone who helped make the carnival a success over the years, together with the local shops and businesses which made carnival day in Ruspidge a great day out."
