A RECENT heritage walk prompted the head teacher of a local primary school to wage a war on weeds at a well-known local monument.

Cilla James, head teacher at Clearwell Church of England Primary School, said: “Clearwell is a picturesque village with a huge amount of heritage.

“During the walk around the village, organised as part of the recent Heritage Open Days, someone pointed out that no one weeds around the 14th century Clearwell Cross anymore.

“This got me thinking and, as a key driver in our curriculum is community, I decided that the children of Clearwell School would be happy to take on this role.

“They had a wonderful time and the result was fabulous.”
