MONEY has been pouring in for a memorial to the Forest sheep lost in the foot and mouth crisis, with plans being drawn up for where it should be sited.
"We first thought that we might put it beside the Parkend-Speech House road where people have been leaving flowers," said Leslie Ramsden after the first meeting of a committee formed by interested parties.
"However as it is on a bend in the road and could well be dangerous for people parking and getting out of cars on the spot we are thinking about New Fancy View as a location, so that people can pull up and walk around safely."
The roadside site where flowers and messages of sympathy are being left lies close to the area where the Ministry of Agriculture carried out a mass cull.
Mr Ramsden, clerk of Ruspidge and Soudley parish Council and treasurer for the memorial group, said the meeting had been well attended and it was clear to see there was a lot of goodwill towards the plan.
A special fund had been started and it was already growing thanks to contributions, many of which had been sent via the Review.
The scheme was originally the idea of Mrs Joy Neal, who said sheep badgers and smallholders needed a place to express their feelings about the animals they had lost. It would also help the many children who had been looking after orphan lambs and pet sheep.
She contacted one-time neighbour and Ruspidge parish councillor Annie Gwilliam who helped her promote the memorial plan, which then started to snowball.
Contributions can now be sent to: Forest Sheep Memorial, C/o Leslie Ramsden MBE, Soudley and Ruspidge Parish Council, Rheola House, Belle Vue Centre, Cinderford GL15 2AB (telephone 01594 825343).
