A SCHOOL is proving a shining light for recycling after a sixth former wrote to Sir David Attenborough for advice on how students and staff could help combat plastic waste.

John Kyrle High School student Debbie Boyd said she was ‘amazed’ when the wildlife champion took time out from his busy schedule to reply to her letter about the environmental impact of plastic.

And thanks to Sir David’s advice, the Ross-on-Wye school is now the proud owner of a plastic bottle recycling machine in the canteen, and also has a facility to recycle card and paper.

Debbie said: “Like many people across the country, I was horrified by the revelations about the effects of plastic on our environment shown on David Attenborough’s recent programme Blue Planet II.

“It triggered many students to notice that the school wasn’t recycling any paper or plastic,” she added.

“So, I wrote a letter to Sir David explaining the problem and asking for any advice he could give, and was amazed when he replied.

“The school responded to this in an incredible way and purchased a plastic bottle recycling machine that now stands in the canteen.

“John Kyrle has made a critical move towards a greener future for our Earth. David Attenborough would be proud.”
