THE BIGGEST game in Chepstow Town's 136-year history went ahead thanks to the efforts of a group of volunteers.

They spent two days removing tons of snow from the ground at Larkfield Park to give Town a fighting chance of staging their fourth round Welsh Cup game against Haverfordwest County.

Club chairman Ian Gardiner said: "We've had about 20 people helping to move the snow off the pitch.

"We had people here from 6am when it was still dark.

"I'm proud of the way people have turned out to help the club."

The game was given the go-ahead on Saturday morning after a pitch inspection – but not everyone was convinced the game should have gone ahead.

Just before it started, Antonio Facciuto, a defender with first division Haverfordwest, tweeted: "Safe to say I haven't seen a pitch like this before! Playable? Um yeah."

Town came close to an upset, fighting back from 3-0 down but fell to a narrow 4-3 defeat.
