TWO markets in the same town. That's the state of play following the opening of two markets in Monmouth, after such a long controversy.
The original market had been situated on the cobbles of the Shire Hall but it was relocated while the historic Grade I listed building underwent its £4.5 million renovation.
Over the past three years the market at Blestium Street has grown and with the space at Agincourt Square being reduced there was not enough room for it to return.
However the people of Monmouth demonstrated against the market not returning to its rightful home forcing the local authority to carry out a consultation exercise which resulted in a decision to locate the town's market on two sites.
Darren Davies, the Monmouth market officer said at last Saturday's re-launch there were around 20 stalls outside the Shire Hall for the market selling everything from fresh food, clothing, toys, flowers and craft stalls.
The return was greeted stilt walkers and an assorted array of street entertainment and music.
Mr Davies added: "The public have decided to have both markets and I feel it will keeps both ends of town alive.
"Trading from both sites it effectively means that the market has doubled in size. When it was decided to reopen at the Shire Hall we had interest from some of the original traders and a number of new ones wanting a stall at the top of town.
"We've only been trading a few hours and already everyone seems very positive with the outcome as there is a good mixture of traders at both sites."
Tom James, the authority's area officer overseeing Monmouthshire markets added: "The re-launch on both sites is looking very good. The people of Monmouth made it perfectly clear they wanted a market at both sites and have already been voting with their feet to ensure it is a success."
