REVIEW snapper Steve Cassidy is undertaking an unusual project – renovating a disused graveyard.
There are around a dozen headstones in the small area adjoining his home which was once the chapel at Ellwood, near Coleford. It was built around 1844.
In those days it proved too small for the congregation so a new one was built together with a new graveyard in 1875.
Steve explained: "I approached the church elders with a view to purchasing and restoring the graveyard as a memorial garden. Happily, they considered the idea and agreed."
Steve is clearing away the undergrowth and plans to plant wild flowers and put in a seat.
"I get a nice garden and the occupants will lie in peace and dignity," said Steve who is getting plenty of help to carry out the work from son, Jamie.
Steve plans to list the names of those buried in the little graveyard and one day, time permitting, trace their histories.
