START of a new term sees the start of new energy generation for one Forest school.

Walmore Hill Primary School in Minsterworth is harnessing the power of the sun to save money and generate power.

Its south-facing roof was in a bad state and has now been fully insulated and photovoltaic solar panels fitted which should supply enough energy to cover the school's annual electric bill and offset other costs.

Walmore Hill headteacher, Sue Meek, said: "The new roof and solar panels were in place ready for the start of the new school year and we're really happy with them. These panels are perfect for schools as we are generally only open during daylight hours when all the electricity is being generated. We also get money back for the electricity which cuts our overall costs.

"In the longer term we will be using the panels and meters to help monitor and further reduce the school's energy usage as well as increasing the children's awareness of climate change and environmental issues."

Gloucestershire County Council stumped up 90 per cent of the costs for roof repairs at the school and insulation. The school paid the remainder, with Cyril Sweet supplying the Sandtoft panels and the builders were Town and City Builders Ltd.
