FOLLOWING your article on the Open Spaces Society and their support in claiming a village green at Caerwent, we would like to add further comment.
It is very sad that for the first time in decades there will be no celebrations to mark the forthcoming royal wedding and Queen's Diamond Jubilee on Merton Green.
However the implications of the recent judgement from the High Court are far reaching.
The group have already been contacted by groups where the judgement is being used by local authorities to appropriate land for building purposes. We might ask "Where will it all end?" The Commons Act 2006 is in layman's terms "obsolete" if the judgement is not challenged and village greens past and future are now threatened with development to solve the financial difficulties that local authorities find themselves in. Our green open spaces will be swallowed up by concrete and will be lost to future generations for pleasure and recreation.
We urge the powers-that-be to clarify the Act which was meant to preserve the village green that promoted the health and well being of the local community as well as provide a haven for wildlife.
