On May 5 we have the opportunity to change to a fairer and more representative system of electing our MPs. This will probably be the one opportunity, certainly within my lifetime, we will have to do this.
Our present system for electing MPs was designed for a different age, when the majority voted for the two main parties. This no longer happens and our method of electing MPs should reflect this.
Under the Alternative Vote (AV) no one can be elected to represent us in parliament until they have received more than 50 per cent of the votes cast by constituents. Currently only about one third of MPs pass this test. AV allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference. Prospective MPs will have to reach further and speak to people who are not their natural supporters.
AV is not a perfect system but is better than what we have at present. Changing to AV will be evolution not revolution, a small change in the way we elect our MPs, a system more responsive to the needs and views of the electorate. Voting "yes" will be voting for a fairer system. Voting "yes" will be taking a stand against the Murdoch press and the 'Big Money' that wants to keep the current system. We owe it to future generations to vote "yes" on Thursday.
