DON'T turn your back on your joint manager – that's the message from David Fryer who, with Gary Lee, runs the village football team at St Briavels.
According to notices being displayed round the village, David, still playing at the age of 44, was "deemed unfit" by Gary and found himself out of the team when they opened their season with a West Dean Charities League game against Milkwall. The team was selected by Gary on a night David was unable to attend training.
But then mysterious notices began to appear headed "Football Manager Dropped".
They said David had been "deemed unfit to play" and quoted him as saying: "I'm gutted. I never dreamed my career would end this way."
Club secretary Jill Skidmore explained: "They are always having digs at each other. They jointly manage the team and it is a bit of fun. But no-one knows – or at least no-one is saying – where the notices came from."
She added: "Just to be on the safe side Gary, aged 36, also left himself out of the team.
"Milkwall won the match 5 - 4 so they could both be counted in for the next game.
Whether or not they pass the ball to each other is another thing ..."
