A group of Key Stage Four students from the Dean Academy in Lydney made a three-day visit to the to the Spanish capital, where they took in the sights of the city and embraced new cultures and experiences.

Highlights included a visit to the Reina Sofia Modern Art Museum to see Guernica, Picasso’s powerful response to the devestating Nazi bombing of the town in the Spanish Civil War.

As well as a tour of Wales star Gareth Bale’s home stadium, they also enjoyed an afternoon at a theme park, an ‘Escape Room’ experience and a guided walking tour of the city where they saw the Royal Palace, Cathedral and the Gran Via.

Year 10 student Josh said: “I enjoyed the whole trip, including the travelling, as it was my first time on a plane.

“I got to try new foods that I have never eaten before such as tapas and octopus. I would definitely go again, it was awesome.”

Another student, Rose, added: “I had never been to Spain before so it was a great opportunity to practise my Spanish, especially when shopping and ordering food.

“I really enjoyed our trip to the ‘Escape Room’, where we had to work in teams to solve puzzles, it was a lot of fun.”

Dean Academy Spanish teacher Jane Burns said: “Our students behaved brilliantly and were a real credit to the school.

“They were willing to try their Spanish out in lots of shops and cafés and having a theme park to ourselves made up for the bad weather that day.”
