INTERESTING to read in the Review dated January 24, 2014 that certain councillors are suggesting a referendum on the boar. In the manner of all politicians, however, they are fudging the issue by suggesting the referendum only covers the scale of a cull not whether local people wish the boar to be eliminated completely or not.
A few minutes internet research will show that most countries in the northern hemisphere have tried to restrict numbers by culling and failed completely. Why should it be any different here?
The internet is awash with stories and film of wild boar attacks often with horrific consequences to both humans and animals. How many attacks have happened without being filmed or reported?
Like foxes, boar have realised that there are easy pickings in urban areas. Unlike foxes boar have a habit of causing mayhem in shopping centres and other areas of human habitation.
What otherwise sane person would wish that to happen here?
Councillors therefore please include in your referendum the option to vote for complete elimination of the boar and ensure that what happened throughout Europe does not happen here.
– Terry Haile, Monmouth.
